Barbershop in the News

Top talent

Helena, MT  March 24, 2011

Four talented local singers take to the stage 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at the Helena Middle School auditorium, competing for bragging rights and the $1,000 grand prize in this year’s Xpress Talent Search Finals.

In this final round, the audience picks the winner.

Three of the finalists competed in previous Xpress Talent Search shows — Fred Collins and Casey McGowan from last year, and Mary Rose Raymond in 2007, the first year of the talent show. This year’s newcomer is Emma Sticht.

Inspired by “American Idol,” the Talent Search is the brainchild of Shelly Pardis, a member of Helena’s Xpress Singers.  Read More--

Vocal Spectrum headlines 50th anniversary show

Vocal Spectrum is a one-off act that's never stopped.

The barbershop quartet formed in 2002 for an event at a high school.

Eric Dalby (lead), Chris Hallam (bass), Jonny Moroni (baritone) Tim Waurick (tenor) liked what they heard and kept the act together.

"We sang together in a college a cappella group called Voices Only," said Waurick in an e-mail.

"We began singing everyday and actually lived in the same school-owned house for a year. We worked very hard and quickly realized we had a great opportunity with this lineup."  Read More--

A Senior Moment: Plenty of avenues to sing with others

Chico, CA  March 19, 2011

Lined up on the risers 23 vivacious women are crooning, "Make Love to Me." Their animated faces, scintillating choreography, and tight harmonies make the song zip. The Sounds of the Valley chorus, a local branch of Sweet Adelines, is having its Wednesday night weekly practice under choral direction of Lu Fox. Mary Beth Massa and Theresa Trunnell choreograph the group's lively movements.

As the women break into "If I Could Write a Song," I am thinking how lucky we are to have so many opportunities for seniors to join in singing in the Chico area. No matter your musical preference or level of expertise, if you like to sing, there is a group for you.  Read More--
